Lifeguard Duties and Responsibilities

  • Follow the Red Cross guidelines to lifeguarding.
  • Monitor activities at the pool to prevent accidents.
  • Rescues patrons in danger of drowning.
  • Administers First Aid when necessary.
  • Inspects the pool for cleanliness, completes general pool cleaning and maintenance.
  • Cautions patrons of unsafe practices and enforce pool rules and regulations.
  • Maintains order in the pool and adjoining areas.
  • Responsible for the availability and safekeeping of emergency equipment. Wear appropriate clothing (females-one piece suit, males-shorts suitable for swimming & a tee-shirt).
  • Provide general information to patrons on pool operation.
  • Completes required paperwork.
  • Take new training courses if necessary.
  • Does not get distracted while on duty.

Lifeguard Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of rules and regulations concerning the conduct of the public pool. (attached)
  • Knowledge of lifesaving procedures, including first aid and standard resuscitation measures.
  • Skilled in the application of lifesaving techniques.
  • Skilled in swimming.
  • Ability to act quickly and calmly in emergencies.
  • Ability to perform rescue actions, administer first aid and CPR.
  • Follow the NLSI protocol for thunder and lightning storms.                                                             

Lifeguard Qualifications

  • Must possess current Lifeguard, Community First Aid and CPR certificates, which are to be filed in the Borough office and a copy at the swimming pool.
  • You will be reimbursed for training, after you complete your commitment of two summers of employment.
